Osmoregulation Flashcards
What is osmoregulation?
The maintenance of a constant osmotic pressure in internal fluids while there is different or varying concentrations externally
What is ionic regulation?
The maintenance of a constant ratio of ions within internal fluids
(When the ratio is different in the external environments)
What is excretion?
Elimination of nitrogenous waste
What is osmosis?
Movement of water molecules through a semi permeable membrane
How is the volume and conc of solutes in an organism maintained?
Changing membrane permeability
Decreasing the conc gradients between body fluid and environment
Active transport of ions
What happens to a cell in isotonic and hypertonic solution?
Isotonic: cell will expand and burst
Hypertonic: cell with shrink
What is an osmoconformer?
Body fluid osmolarity is similar to the external environment
What is an osmoregulator?
Can maintain body fluid osmolarity different from the external environment
What is hyper osmotic?
Body fluid osmolarity is greater than the external environment
What osmoregulatory pattern are most marine invertebrates?
Osmoconformers
What does euryhaline mean and give an example of an animal
Can tolerate a wide range of salinity e.g brine shrimp
What is a common strategy in marine animals to achieve iso osmotic extracellular fluid?
Retention of urea
What are the solutions for osmoregulation?
Active excretions of salts
Specialised ion transporting cells called chloride cells
