OSI Model Flashcards
OSI Model Layer 1 - provide name, use, and example
Physical Layer - transmits raw bit stream over the physical medium. ex Hubs, Cables, Repeater
OSI Model Layer 2 - provide name, use, and example
Datalink Layer - defines the format of the data on the network. ex. Bridges, Modems, NICs, Access Points, Layer 2 switches
OSI Model Layer 3 - provide name, use, and example
Network Layer - decides which physical path the data will take. ex. Routers, Layer 3 switches
OSI Model Layer 4 - provide name, use, and example
Transport Layer - transmits data using transmission protocols including TCP and UDP. ex. Gateways, Firewalls
OSI Model Layer 5 - provide name, use, and example
Session Layer - maintain connections , starts/stops/restarts communications between devices and apps. ex. NFS (Network File System)
OSI Model Layer 6 - provide name, use, and example
Presentation Layer - ensures that data is in a usable format and where data encoding and encryption occurs. ex. JPEG, ASCII, WAV, AVI
OSI Model Layer 7 - provide name, use, and example
Application Layer - human-computer interaction layer, where applications can access the network services. ex Web browser, Outlook, Word
