OSI Model Flashcards
Layer 1
Physical Layer
Transmits data over a physical medium.
Layer 2
Data-Link Layer
Includes information about the source and destination hardware addresses of the communicating devices. It also specifies lower layer-layer flow control and and error control.
Layer 3
Network Layer
Moves packets over an internetwork so that they can be routed to the correct network.
Layer 4
Transport Layer
Is usually associated with reliable end-to-end communication. It is the layer responsible for connections, error control, and flow control between sender and receiver.
Layer 5
Session Layer
Manages communication sessions between service requesters and service providers. This layer manages communications by establishing, synchronizing and maintaining connection between sender and reciever.
Layer 6
Presentation Layer
Formats and translates data. An example of a Presentation layer service is the compression or encryption of data.
Layer 7
Application Layer
Supports the communication of applications with the network.
