OSI Model Flashcards
What are the layers of the OSI model?
Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application
What comprises the Physical layer?
Hubs, cables, radiowaves, physical parts
What comprises the Data Link layer?
MAC addresses, switches, NICs
Which layer has two sublayers? What are they?
Data Link has two sublayers: Logical Link Control, and Media Access Control
What does the LLC sublayer do?
Talks to OS, provides flow control, handles multiple network protocols
What does the Media Access Control sublayer do?
Creates and addresses the frame, adds or checks FCS, ensures that frames are sent along the cable
What makes up the Network layer?
Packets and IP addresses, routers
What does the Transport layer do?
Assembly & disassembly of data, chopping up data to fit multiple packets (segments or datagrams)
What does the Session layer do?
Handles a system’s sessions
What does the Presentation layer do?
Translates data from lower layers into a usable/readable format for Application layer
