OSI Layers Flashcards
What is Layer 1?
Physical
What is Layer 2?
data Link
What is Layer 3?
Network
What is Layer 4?
Transport
What is Layer 5?
Session
What is Layer 6?
Presentation
What is Layer 7?
Application
what is included in the physical layer
Wires, mediums, topology, flow control, etc
What is included in Layer 2?
MAC sublayer, Logical Link Control sublayer, the actual communication protocol such as PPP or RADIUS
What does the network layer, layer 3, consist of?
Functional and procedural means of transferring variable length data sequences (datagrams). Also can include routing
Talk about the Transport Layer, #4
layer four describes procedural methods for transferring data sequences form a source to a destination host via one or more networks while maintaining QoS.
What is session layer?
controls the dialogues between computers such as duplexing (half, full, multi-mode, simplex). Also establishes checkpointing, adjournment, termination, and restart procedures. Uses TCP for graceful closure
Presentation Layer has control and function of what?
different applications systems and semantics to create the presentation of information
What is included in the application layer?
this layer in lcudes the user and the application software. includes allocating resources, and syncing communication. Example pieces include: browsers, FTP programs, mail programs, etc.
