What is it
irritation and inflammation of the patella tendon at its attachment point on the tibial tuberosity.
Creating a bump just below the knee cap
Epidemiology
1 in 10 Adolescents - more common in active people
Adolescents in rapid growth spurts
Typically affects Males more than Females - changing as more females in sports
Age
10 - 15
Symptoms resolving as growth plates close in late adolescence
Risk
Physical activity - running, jumping etc
Growth spurts
Tight quadricep muscles - can increase traction on the tibial tubercle, exacerbating the symptoms
Presentation
Pain
Tenderness
Swelling - prominent lump on tibial tubercle
Pain with activity - that involve the quadriceps
Can be uni or bilateral
Prognosis
Self limiting - most cases resolve on their own as growth plates close
Residual bump - permanent bony bump on tibial tuberosity
Rare - chronic pain - surgery
