Oscillation Flashcards
Simple Harmonic Motion
a type of periodic motion where the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement and acts in the direction opposite to that of displacement.
Sinusoidal
curve with form of sin wave
Simple Pendulum
a small object suspended from the end of a lightweight cord that will oscillate back and forth when displaced from its rest position
Damped Oscillation
An oscillation in which the amplitude of the motion decreases in time until the motion stops altogether
Resonance
the state of a system in which an abnormally large vibration is produced in response to an external stimulus, occurring when the frequency of the stimulus is the same as the natural frequency of the system
waves
an oscillation accompanied by the transfer of energy through space or mass
pulse
a single disturbance that moves through a medium from one point to another
Wavelength
the distance between corresponding points on consecutive waves
standing waves
a combo of two waves moving in opposite directions, each having the same frequency and amplitude
Amplitude
the maximum extent of a vibration or oscillation, measured from the equilibrium position
frequency
the rate at which something occurs or is repeated over a particular period of time or in a given sample
period
the time needed for one complete cycle of a repeated motion
longitudinal wave
a wave vibrating in the direction of propagation
transverse wave
A wave vibrating perpendicular to the direction of the propagation
medium
the intervening substance through which impressions are conveyed to the senses or a force acts on objects at a distance
