When prescribing an oral suspension on a hospital chart what must you remember?
Write dose in mg NOT ml
i.e. amoxicillin 250mg/ in 5ml oral suspension
Dose: 250mg (NOT 5ml)
Frequency: TDS
When prescribing ibuprofen, you have seen an appropriate 100mg/ 5ml suspension of cuprofen, available on the BNF (to be given PRN but no more than TDS). How should this be written on a hospital chart?
Ibuprofen 100/5ml oral suspension
Dose: 100mg
Frequency: Every 6 hours
Max dose: 300mg

A patient with eczema has weeping and crusting, what topical treatment should be provided?
Fucidin H
How should chlamydia be treated? How should partners be screened/ treated?
Single dose Azithromycin
- All partners in last 6 months should be contacted and treated BEFORE investigation results
Which anti-emetic is best for use to treat chemotherapy related nausea?
Domperidone (acts at chemoreceptors)
Ondansetron (5-HT3 antagonist (seretonin))
Which anti-emetic is best for use to treat middle ear related nausea?
Cyclizine (Histamine antagonist)
What is first line anti-emetic in pregnancy (including HG?)
Cyclizine or promethazine
How do you treat gonorrhoea?
Ceftriaxone 500 mg intramuscularly as a single dose with azithromycin 1 g oral as a single dose
(later good for co-existing chlamydia)
How do you treat PID?
IM Ceftriaxone
- 14 days metronidazole of doxycycline
How do you treat conjunctivitis?
Supportive (resolve in 1-2 weeks)
If thinking bacterial:
- Topical chloramphenicol
- Topical fucidic acid (if pregnant)
What is the best anti-emetic for motion sickness?
Hyocine bromide
Or cyclizine/ promethazine if above not tolerated
What is meant by a 0.5% solution? I.e. Lidocaine 0.5%?
0.5grams of solute in every 100ml
(A 2% solution would be 2g of solute in every 100ml etc).
