You get a sharps injury, what do you do next?
o Make bleed and run under warm water
o Inform head nurse who will take patients blood
o Arrange a blood sample to be taken from yourself
o Assess patient risk – ask them the questions from the risk assessment form
o Complete Datix form and inform occupational health.
o May need post exposure prophylaxis if the patient is high risk.
Problems with LA cartridges
There is no information about the contents of the cylinder
The expiry date has passed
The solution is cloudy
There is a crack or fracture in the cylinder
There is a large air bubble obvious in the solution
The plunger is extruded from the end of the cylinder
