OSCE Flashcards
How do you mix Kalzinol?
Place an appropriate amount of powder and liquid onto a clean glass slab, incorporate successive small portions of powder into the liquid ensuring complete mixing of each addition, continue adding until a putty like consistency is obtained (roll into sausage)
What is Kalzinol used for?
- Base under filling materials
- Soothing temporary filling
- Temporary seal for medicament dressings
- Indirect pulp capping
What powder:liquid ratio should Kalzinol be mixed in for all applications?
5:1
What is the mixing time of Kalzinol?
1-1.5 mins
What is the working time for Kalzinol?
2 mins from end of mix
What is the setting time for Kalzinol?
3 mins 30 and 4 mins 30
What is the effect of warm conditions on working and setting time of Kalzinol?
Decreases working and setting time
What is the effect of cold conditions on working and setting time of Kalzinol?
Increases working and setting time
How do you finish Kalzinol?
Once set (approx 3 mins after being in mouth) it can be trimmed and finished
When should Kalzinol not be used?
As a base for composite reactions (may cause softening of the overlaying composite material)
What type of material is Kalzinol?
A polymer reinforced fast setting zinc oxide eugenol cement (Dentine shade)
How do you mix alginate?
Shake container before to loosen the powder, use a measuring scoop for powder and beaker for water, place the powder into the mixing bowl and add the water, mix to a homogenous consistency
What type of material is alginate?
Irreversible hydrocolloid impression material
What are the indications for using alginate?
- Case study models
- Orthodontic models
- Opposing models
- Removable partial dentine frameworks, not involving transfers and/or precision attachments
- Removable retainers or splints
- Provisional restorations
What is the mixing time for alginate?
30 seconds
What is the working time for alginate?
60 seconds
What is the setting time for alginate?
2 minutes

What is Aquasem?
Translucent GIC luting material
What is Aquasem used for?
- Cementing halls crowns
- Cementing crowns, bridges, inlays and orthodontic bands
What material is used for cementing halls crowns?
Aquasem
How do you mix Aquasem?
Use 2 scoops powder to 4 drops of distilled water, divide the powder into two halves, mix one half with the water…. as soon as the first half is wetted add the second half and mix thoroughly = smooth creamy consistency
What is the mixing time for Aquasem?
15 seconds
What is the working time for Aquasem?
2.5mins
What is the setting time for Aquasem?
3.5-5 mins
What are properties of aquasem that make it ideal?
- Safe and easy to use
- forms chemical bond to dentine and enamel
- Anticariogenic (fluoride releasing)
- High compressive strength, low solubility and low film thickness
- Translucency, fluoride release and radiopacity
Which instrument should be used to extract a buccally located 8?
Warwick james
What are cryers elevators used to do?
Remove roots
What are luxators used to do?
(rounded top) remove tooth from bone

Elevator
What does the flat top of the elevator achieve?
Detach PDL
Which teeth are these used to extract? (straight line forceps pic)
Upper teeth (straight handle
Which teeth are these used to extract? (90 degree forceps pic)
Lower teeth (90 degree angle)
What instrument is this? pic
Bayonettes
What are bayonettes used for?
For upper 8’s (really long)
How does a dry mouth affect the dentition?
Increased caries (less action of saliva as buffer), caries more cervically placed
If someone starts suffering Angina in the chair what do you do?
Sit pt up and give GTN spray sublingual 400mg and wait 3-5 mins
If someone goes into cardiac arrest in the chair what do they look like?
Grey, death like, sense of impending doom
If someone goes into cardiac arrest in the chair what do you do?
Chewable aspiring 300mg, 50:50 nitrous and oxygen, can also give GTN
If someone is collapsed what do you do?
Check area is safe, shake shoulder, can you hear me? I am kayleigh and I am going to help you, check airways, feel breath and CPR
What amounts of chest compressions to breaths do you do in CPR?
2:30
If someone is having epilepsy what will you see?
Dizziness, sweaty, convulsions
What do you do if someone starts having a seizure?
- Midazolam buccally, let them fit, remove glasses or bag but if >5 mins call 999 (status epilepticus) OR if its their first fit
- Cover with blanket, will probably wet themselves and protect their heads
How does someone who is hypoglycaemic appear?
Sweating and agitated
How do you treat a hypoglycaemic patient?
If can drink = glucose drink, if cannot drink = hypostopgel into buccal gums or IM glucagon if unresponsive
When might IM glucagon not help?
If alcoholic (liver impairment) or anorexics (no glucose reserve)
