RAAF INFORMATION: What are the basic principles of RADAR

A

Radio Detection and Ranging
Refers to the electronic equipment used to detect and trace object (targets) at considerable distances.
It uses a transmitter that sends out a pulse of energy at the speed of light and a receiver picks it up.

e.g. JORN, utilises the refractive properties of the upper atmosphere (ionosphere) where a High frequency wave is sent out, and is reflected off an object where some of the energy is sent back, picked up by high sophisticated computer systems to determine an object RADAR footprint (location)

RADAR on Aircraft:
Air traffic control uses primary (radar reflects all kinds of echos, including aircraft and clouds) and secondary radars (emits pusles and listens for special answer of digital data emitted by an Aircraft Transponder.
