Pelvic fractures, crushing injuries and long bone injuries.
Symptoms of fat emboli
Petechia, rash over check, conjunctival hemorrhages, snow storm on CXR, young males are risk takers, happens in 1st 36 hrs.
Treatment for compartment syndrome
Elevate extremity, soft cast to allow swelling then rigid cast, loosen cast to restore circulation, fasciotomy, cast cutters to remove cast.
Cast care
ice packs on the side for first 24hrs because cast is still wet. (not on top of it), no indentations, use palms for 1st 24 hrs, keep uncovered and allow for air drying, rest on soft pillows, no plastics, mark breakthrough bleeding, circle area, date and time site. Cover cast close to groin with plastic (once dry), neuro checks with 5ps

Isometric (squeezing or tensing muscles); increase venous return, maintains muscle strengths.
