Orthopedic Flashcards
Depth gauge
Screw depth gauge
Used to confirm the deth of the drill hole in bone to determine the length of the screw

Ruler
Measuring stick
Used to measure structure and distances
Mallet
Hammer
Usually weights 1 to 3 pounds
used in other specialties that involve bone work
used to impact and extract implatns or exert force on osteotomes, chisels, gouges, tamps, and other specially designed instruments

Bone Tamp
tamp
used to ompact or wedge a structure into place

Bone cement injector
Cement gun
used to inject bone cement during total joint procedures

Bone cement system
used to mix the liquid and powder to produce bone cement

Pump Tubing

Bone File
Rasp
has a flat end serrations in a crisscross pattern
Used to smooth ut the rough edges or surfaces of large bones

Miller Rasp
small rasp
Used for smoothing rough edges or surfaces of small bones

Putti Bone Rasp
Rat tail
the blade surfaces are covered with tiny spikes
Used for smoothing rough edges or surfaces of large bones

Key elevator
Dissects or separates hard tissues

Freer elevator
lifts the periosteum from bone or retracts in confined spaces

Liston bone cutting forceps
large bone cutters
used to cut large bones

Stille Bone Gouge
used to cut or scoop out a channel of bone

Stille bone chisel
used to cut or shape bone. the chisel is often used when harvesting a bone graft

Cushing Rongeur
Used to remove pieces of bone and soft tissue surrounding the bone

Pliers
Channel locks
used to place or remove hardware and to grasp pointed trocar during drain insertion of deep wounds

Bennett retractor
used to retract tissues during procedures involving large bones

Murphy-lane bone skid
used to remove the femoral head from the joint during ttal hip arthroplasty

Bone Hook
used to retract bone or heavy tissue

Mini hohmann retractor
used to retract tissue or bone in tight, small areas. Often used during open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of the ankle

Blunt Hohmann Retractor
used to retract small amount of tissue in a very tight area

Ragnell retractor
used to retract varying amounts of tissue at different depths

Cobra retractor
used to retract large areas of tissue. the large blade allows tissue to be retracted far away from the field, allowing for better visualization

Alm retractor
Self-retaining retractor
used to retract small areas

Bone reduction forceps
Cobb Elevator
Ruskin Rongeur

Arthroscopic blunt/sharp obturator

Arthroscopic duckbill biter
Cuts and dissects tissue facing the surgeon

Arthroscopic shaver (meniscutome)

Lister Bandage scissors

Gelpi retractor

Plate bending pliers
used duing an ORIF to bend the plate to conform to the contour of the bone

Plate forceps (Verbrugge)
Plate holding forceps, plate holders, plate clamp
Used to hold the plate in alignment while drilling and screw placement take place

Tissue guard
Drill guide
Used to align the drill bit in the center of teh hole in the plate, protects teh soft tissue from dammage, and prevents the drill from slipping and making a larger hole.

T-handle and taps

Screwdriver

Kern bone-holding forceps
Used for manipulating bone fractures into place and for holding the fracture in alignment while plates and screws are placed
Used to grast bone segments during total joint procedures.

Lewin bone-holding forceps
Used for manipulating bone fractures into place and for holding the fracture in alignment while plates and screws are placed
Also used to punch holes in bone for passage of sutures when closing the jint during a hip arthroplasty

Lowman bone clamp
Used for holding the fractured bone in alignment while plates and screws are placed

Kirschner wires (K-wires)
Used for fixation of boe fractures
Ofetn used on small bones such as phalanges, wrist, and ankle
Often place percutaneously

Steinman pins (smooth and threaded)
Used for fixation of bone fractures, bone reconstruction, and as a guide pin when placing implants and placing skeletal traction
Often used on large bones

Pin cutter (cannulated pin cutter)
Pin cutter
Used for cutting wire or small pins

Needle nose pliers
Remove pins and hardware and twist wires

Drill bit set

Chuck and key
Drill chuck
Used to hold rotating devices, such as drill bit or a pin in a power tool.
Chuck key is used to tighten or loosen the jaws of the chuck

Gigli saw (cable and handles)
Hand saw used for cutting bone
Often used for amputations and can be use to open the skill for craniotomies

Oscillating saw

Reciprocating saw

Sagittal saw

Power drill/reamer
Lamina spreader

2-prong knee retractor

Meyerding handeld retractor
Retract wound edges

Stille-Luer rongeur
Straight Rongeur, large moth rongeur
Used to grast, bite, and detach large amounts of tissue

Lambotte osteotome (curved and straight)
Used to cut or shape bone
Ofetn used when harvesting bone graft

Meyerding finger retractor
Used for retracting small wounds

Meyerding Laminectomy retractor
Used for deep retraction during spinal surgery
