Orthopaedics Lower Limb: Total Hip Joint Arthroplasty Flashcards
Cost of total hip joint replacement?
$25,000 to $30,000
Surgery takes between
1 and 2 hours
Length of stay is about
3 to 7 days
Average blood loss is
400 to 600 mls
Incidence of blood transfusion is approximately? And how long does post-op anaemia last?
25% incidence
Post-op anaemia lasts 4 to 6 weeks
A posterior surgical approach has a risk of
Posterior instability (dislocation) (flexion, IR, adduction) - avoid crossing legs
A anterior surgical approach has a risk of
Anterior instability (dislocation) (extension, ER, adduction)
Dislocation risk is at its highest in the first
6 weeks of surgery
Patients WB status is dependent on
- The quality of fixation
- Type of fracture
- Quality of bone stock (older adults have poorer healing)
Discharge when able to:
- Transfer independently
- Walk safely on crutches
- Climb and descend stairs
- Medically stable
DVT can occur in up to ____% of people undergoing THJR
30% - can be reduced by early mobilisation, elastic stocking and aspirin
Metal and Plastic Implant
The metal and plastic implants are the most commonly used. Both the ball and socket are replaced with a metal prosthesis and a plastic (polyethylene) spacer in between.
Metal on Metal Implant
No plastic inserted between. They do not wear out as quickly as some other implants (much less than metal and plastic)
Ceramic on Ceramic Implant
Designed to be the most resistant to wear of all available replacement implants. They wear even less than metal on metal implants. Scratch resistant and smoother than any of these other implant materials.
There are concerns of ceramic implants breaking inside the body.
