Insertion: adding extra letters
Omission: the missing out of letters
Substitution: substituting one letter for another
Transposition: reversing correct orders of letters in words
Phonetic Spelling: using sound awareness to guess letters and combinations
Over/under generalisation: incorrectly applying spelling rules
Salient sounds: writing using only the key sounds

  1. Pre-communicative: create message/have meaning, invented symbols.
  2. Semi Phonetic: letters have sounds, words are abbreviated.
  3. Phonetic: Sound-symbol basis, miss out salient words.
  4. Transitional: spellings that reflect accepted letter strings in English
  5. Conventional: fully competent speller, visual strategies, basis of patters, word structure, ability to distinguish
