What are some important features of a dental history with regards to orthodontic assessment?
All the usual things plus
- previous trauma
- previous treatments
- cooperation with dental treatment
- expectations
What are some important features of a social history with regards to ortho assessment?
Do they know any others with braces
Expectations for braces
Smoker?
Drink?
After asking histories, what is it very important to check with an ortho assessment?
Habits
- tongue thrust
- digit sucking
- fingernail biting
- lip trap
After histories, what is the first stage of checking the patient in an orthodontic assessment?
Check the TMJ for any crepitus, clicking etc.
Record
After checking a patients tmj in ortho assessment, what should follow?
Checking the AP skeletal relationship
Frankfort plane parallel to ground and head in natural head position
Palpate skeletal bases
Class 1, 2 or 3
After checking the AP relationship, what follows in ortho assessment?
Vertical pattern
- FMPA angle check
&
- LAFH:UAFH ratio
After vertical assessment, what should be done in ortho assessment?
Transverse
- assess facial symmetry of note

Competent lips
Lip traps

Naiso-labial angle

Teeth present
Poor prognosis or poor quality teeth
Oral hygiene levels
Periodontal condition
Tooth wear
Crowding and alignment of arches in isolation
