Outline Carpel Tunnel syndrome
A
D: Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of median nerve in the carpal tunnel.
E: Most common entrapment neuropathy (prevalence about 1 in 25). Females aged between 40 and 60 years are at highest risk. Risk: Pregnancy, oedema, lunate fracture, RA.
P: Numbness in median nerve distribution. Worse at night. Thenar wasting. Weakness of thumb abduction (abductor pollicis brevis).
I:
Electromyogram (EMG): Prolonged action potential along motor and sensory axons.
T:
Conservative: Splint
Medical: Corticosteroid injection
Surgical: Surgical release of carpal tunnel
P:
Very good, especially with definitive surgical treatment.
