Indications for exodontia

A
  1. Unrestorable teeth
  2. Periodontal disease
  3. Pericoronitis
  4. Teeth associated with large pathology
  5. Orthodontic reasons
  6. Trauma
  7. Teeth interfering with construction of a prosthesis
  8. Teeth within fracture line
  9. Abnormal teeth
  10. Any tooth impeding the eruption of another tooth
  11. Financial/Phobia

How to decide what the best treatment plan is for the patient

A
1. Informed Consent
Discuss alternative options (whether to keep the tooth or not:
a. Restore to function
b. Restore but not functional
c. Prognosis
  1. Is it safe to perform the extraction?
    a. Check medical history - complex etc..
    b. Know your limitations and when to refer
  2. Cross Infection Control
    a. Protect your patients
    b. Protect yourselves
