They were helping uncivilised countries by telling them about God
These countries were wasting materials and that Britain could make better use of them
Why was the empire needed?
More industry required greater resources
Competition from other powers
To prevent other powers taking the countries first
Why were Gibraltar, Malts and the Falklands significant?
Very important naval bases which provided protection. Eg trade routes
