Q

How would a structuralist historian interpret the Cold War?

A

Structuralists believe individuals only have a limited impact within the systems in which they operate. Eg: Svetlana Aliluyeva, Stalin’s daughter said “Stalin was impotent in the face of the frighful system which had grown up around him”

Q

What was the Hallestein doctrine?

A

It meant that West Germany did not recognise East Germany as a state, and would sanction any states which maintained diplomatic ties with East Germany (except from the USSR).
It succeeded in isolating the GDR for a long time.

*It ended in 1971 following the Four Power Agreement, with Wily Brandt pursuing Ostpolitik.
