50 nations met in San Francisco in April of 1945 to establish the UN.
The most visible symbol of peace.
Had the power to recommend but not enforce.
How does the United Nations work?
It serves as a platform for international cooperation among member nations.
What is a Satellite nation?
A smaller country controlled by another (bigger) nation.
Examples include Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Poland.
What is the definition of Containment?
The U.S.’s attempt to contain the spread of communism.
What does the Iron Curtain represent?
The division of Europe.
What is the Cold War?
A conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in which neither nation confronted on the battlefield.
What was the Truman Doctrine?
Truman asked Congress for $400 million to help two countries.
To help Turkey and Greece from being controlled by the Soviet Union, and/or other communist nations.
What was the purpose of the Marshall Plan?
Provided aid to all European countries in need.
Revived European hopes; 16 countries received ~ $13 billion in aid.
What was the Berlin airlift?
Started to fly food and supplies into West Berlin for 327 days.
American prestige was boosted around the world; Soviets lifted the blockade.
What is NATO?
An alliance formed by 10 western European nations and the U.S. for military defense during peacetime.
Included Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Canada, and the U.S.
