Origins Of Psychology Flashcards
What was Wunds aim
To record thoughts and sensations and analyse their component parts , they could be scientifically studied using introspection
What is introspection
From the Latin meaning ‘looking into’, was a form of experimental self observation which involved training people to analyse the content of their own private thoughts during controlled conditions
Why did wunt introduce the scientific method
To investigate introspection which involved strictly controlled conditions and the same standardised instructions were used so each participant was tested in the same way
One strength of wundts work
Some aspects of wundts work would be classed as scientific today, he studied introspections within a controlled laboratory environment
A limitation of wundts work
Wundts methods were unreliable as his use of introspection relied primarily on ‘non-observable ‘ responses . Also introspective experimental results were not reliably repeated by other researchers
