  • traditional conservatism emerged as a reaction to the rational principle of the enlightenment (a European intellectual movement of the late 17th and 18th century emphasising reason rather than tradition)
  • this entails beliefs in a feudal, hierarchical order of society
  • this idea developed in the 19th and 20th century when one nation conservatism emerged from Disraeli which draws upon ideas of the state, led by the elite making adjustments to society/economy
  • neo-conservatism developed as out of a reaction of the permissiveness of the 1960s of which conservatives felt threatened the traditional values that were being eroded
  • the new right is a philosophical marriage between neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism that emerged in the 1970s
  • new right believed that one nation conservatives had made may changes within the state
