MARCHING BANDS - ex-military instruments (cornets, trombones, sousaphones, snare drums, bass drum) = early jazz band line up.
Bass line 1 + 5 + structure (rondoesque)

RAGTIME

NEGRO SPIRITUAL- African musical elements, Christian religious hymns, hardships of slavery, hope for freedom. Primary chords, C+R, improv, embellishments.

PLANTATION SONGS - Eu harmony, concentrated musical elements of African American folk music

A

Style of composition + piano playing, striding LH, syncopated RH, same structure as March or dance.
Grew out of ballroom dances, marches / songs
