Organs, spermatogenesis and ejaculation Flashcards
What is the purpose of the male reproductive system?
To produce, store and release male gametes or sperm
Wht are the external genital organs
Penis and scrotum
Internal genital organs
Testes, epididymis, vas deferens and accessory gland (seminal vesicle, prospate gland. And bulbourethral gland)
Explain penis
Contains a spongy tissue that becomes swollen and upright when filled with blood
What is a scrotum and why are testes located in here?
Scrotum is a pouch of skin formed from the lower part of the abdominal wall.
Testes are located here to keep the temperature of them slightly cooler than body temperature. If inside the body, temperature too high, sperm will die
What are testes made of?
Tightly coiled structures called seminiferous tubles
What produced among these tumbles?
Testosterone (the primary male sex hormone)
What is testosterone?
Testosterone is the hormone that causes boys to develop deeper voices, bigger muscles, and body and facial hair. It also stimulates the production of sperm.
Explain what is Epididymis and what happens in epididymis?
Tightly coiled tubes against the testes.
Acts as a maturation and storage place for sperm.
What Internal organ transfers sperm from the epididymis to the urethra in the penis?
Hint: It’s a long thick tube
Vas Deferens
What are the three accessory glands??
Seminal vesicular, prospate gland and bulbourethral gland.
What gland provides alkaline mucin and lubricrates urethra?
Bulbourethral gland
What gland produce a sticky yellowish fluid that contain fructose (sugar)?
Seminal vesicle
What gland provides alkaline ph and clotting enzymes?
Phosphate gland
Explain structure of sperm (head, midpiece and tail)
Head - contains DNA
Midpiece - The narrow middle part of the cell that mitochondria for swimming
Tail - the wave like motion that propels the cell forward
