Organs and functions Flashcards
Salivary gland
Produces salivary amylase. This contains enzymes, which break down carbohydrates. This happens in the mouth.
Oesophagus
This is where the food goes down. To help push food down, it has a function called peristalsis. This is when the muscles inside squeeze in waves so the food can go down.
Liver
Produces bile (an alkali) which can neutralise stomach/hydrochlauric acid when it goes down into the small intestine. This is so the enzymes in the small intestine will not be denatured.
Stomach
Mixes food with protease enzymes. Hydrochlauric acid is present. Also, it churns to make food more fluid. The muscle movement helps the food to be broken down.
Pancreas
Produces enzymes to speed up the food being broken down. These include protease, lipase and carbohydrase.
Gall bladder
Stores enzymes and bile.
Small intestine
Produces enzymes to further break down food into even smaller molecules. The rest is waste.
Large intestine
Absorbs water.
Rectum
Stores feces.
