Organization of Matter Flashcards
What are the two types of pure substances?
Elements and Compounds
Elements consist of one type of atom, while compounds consist of two or more different atoms bonded together.
What are the two main types of mixtures?
Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixtures
Homogeneous mixtures have uniform composition, while heterogeneous mixtures have distinct regions.
What are the four states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma
Plasma is the state where gases are ionized, often seen in stars.
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of an element that retains its chemical properties.
Atoms consist of protons, neutrons, and electrons, with protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons orbiting around.
What is the difference between an ion and a molecule?
Ions are charged particles
Molecules are neutral groups of atoms bonded together
Ions form by gaining or losing electrons.
