What is MSY?
Maximum Sustainable Yield - predicts the maximum number of fish that can be caught without damaging the long term stock
What does ICES stand for and what do they do?
International Council for the Exploitation of the Seas. They survey fishing activity, advise the EU on all quotas and look into strategies and discards.
Cefas?
Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science. They run research vessels, are statutory consultees (must be consulted with all fishing science changes) and supply fish tags.
CPRS
Continuous Plankton Recordance Surveys - estimate survivorship and recruitment
TAC
Total Allowable Catch - a quota set in place to monitor fish stocks which are likely to be overfished
IBTS
International Bottom Trawl Survey which is run by ICES in the North Sea. It integrates all data collected by all nations
STECF
Scientific, Technical and Economical Committee for Fisheries. They gather data regarding fisheries and their governing bodies for ICES
JNCC
Joint Nature Conservation Committee. UK scientific advisors who decide on steps to move towards using EBA’s
IFCA
Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities. They monitor water up to 6nm from the coast and are allowed to over ride decisions from other countries. mainly boats under 10m and potting, crustaceans and gill net fishing
MMO
Marine Management Organisation. Monitor water from 6-200nm and control all legislation and fishing activity
RFMO
Regional Fishery Management Organisation. They manage stocks laid out by the FAO such as ICCAP

UN Food and Agriculture Organisation
ICCAT
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas
