To know the different organisations that operate in the Music Industry
Small- Medium Venue
pub, club, small theatre.
Usually local- eg Big Jug, Gala Theatre in Durham.
Host wide ranges of different music and styles.
Local promoters may use to gain experience
Large, multi use spaces
Arena, Outdoor Arena, Sports Venues
Eg Metro Arena Newcastle, Riverside Cricket Ground, Stadium of Light- All host large scale events with big names and different types of events.
Health and Safety
It is the responsibility of the venue to make sure H&S laws are followed.
Record Company
Major (well known, usually large) or independent (not so well known, smaller).
Music Publisher
Responsible for getting the music to print.
Broadcaster
Responsible for getting material performed on TV, radio or the internet.
Marketing
Making the product well known by promoting and advertising it. Can include online, in shops and social media
Distributor
Responsible for getting the product from the warehouse to the stores.
Artist Representation
Can also be called Agent, Manager, Public Relations, Stylist. Responsible for booking appointments, planning schedules and arranging appearances etc.
Hire Company
Hires lighting, sound equipment, scaffolding, rehearsal and studio space to venues, artists or groups.
Transport
Responsible for taking equipment from one venue to the next on a tour, or delivering items to where they need to be.
Musicians Union
A union which represents the rights of musicians.
Eg helps with contract matters, legal advice, advice on tax and national insurance, makes sure pay and conditions meet minimum standards.
Equity
An example of a union in the Performing Arts Industry. Helps with contract matters, legal advice, advice on tax and national insurance, makes sure pay and conditions meet minimum standards.
Promoter/ Promotions
Matches artists to venue, including:
size, capacity, facilities, technical support needed/ available, audience capacity, transport links, timings/ licence, financial considerations, ticket sales.
