Organisation & The Circulatory System Flashcards
What is a cell
Basic building blocks of all living organisms
What is a tissue
Group of cells with a similar structure and function
What is an organ
Groups of tissues performing specific functions
What is an organ system
Groups of organs performing specific functions
What do pacemaker cells do?
Determine resting heart rate
What are artificial pacemakers
Electrical devices that correct irregularities
Where are pacemaker cells found
Right atrium
What side is the vena Cava and what’s its role
Right side, brings deoxygenated blood from the body
What side is the pulmonary artery and what’s its role
Right, Moves deoxygenated blood out of the heart and to the lungs
What side is the aorta and what’s its role
Left side, moves oxygenated blood into the rest of the body
What side is the pulmonary vein and what’s its role
Left, Brings oxygenated blood into the heart, from the lungs
What do valves in the heart do
Prevent backflow of blood
Which side of the heart has thicker muscular walls and why
The left, needs to pump the blood further (into the rest of the body rather than just the lungs)
What are coronary arteries
Supply the heart muscle with oxygenated blood
What does a double circulatory system mean
Blood passes through the heart twice per circuit around the body
