Organisation and structure Flashcards
What is the function of epithelial cells?
The function of epithelial cells is to protect the structure from dehydration, chemical and mechanical damage, secretion and absorption
Where does epithelial tissue cover?
Epithelial tissue covers the body and lines cavities
What is meant by homeostasis?
It is the “condition of monitoring balance within the bodies internal environment”
Where is the plasma membrane located in relation to a cell?
The edge of a cell
What is mitochondria used for?
Aerobic respiration
During aerobic respiration what form are mitochondria better known as?
ATP
What are ribosomes used for?
Ribosomes make proteins from amino acids
Name the three types of simple epithelial which have one cell layer
The three types are squamous (pavement), cuboidal and columular
What functions do connective tissues possess?
Insulation, binding and structural support, transportation and protection
Name the two types of connective tissue
Loose connective and dense connective tissue
What does loose connective tissue provide?
Elasticity and strength also it connects and supports other tissue
What makes dense connective tissue different to other connective tissue?
Found in fewer cells and it has more fibres
Where are keratinised stratified squamous epithelium found?
Dry surfaces that suffer wear and tear (skin/nails)
What does keratinised stratified squamous epithelium do?
It forms a tough waterproof layer
What does non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium do?
Protects moist surfaces subject to wear and tear (eyes, lining of the mouth, vagina)
