Organisation Flashcards
what do cells make up
cells make up tissue
tissue makes up organs
organs make organ systems
what is the lock and key theory
each substrate fits into one specific active site
what do Carbohydrase break down
Lipase
Protease
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Lipids/Fats
what is the test for starch and what is the colour change
Add a few drops of Iodine to food sample
Gently shake to mix
If starch is present, colour change
from orange to blue/black
what are Carbohydrates broken down into
Proteins
Lipids/Fats
Simple Sugars
Amino Acids
Glycerol and 3 Fatty
Acids
name 3 enzymes
Carbohydrase
Lipase
Protease
what is the test for sugar and what is the colour change
Add a drop of Benedict solution to a prepared food sample
Gently heat
If positive, you will see a colour
change from Blue to Brick-Red. if lots of sugar is present
what is the test for lipids and what is the colour change
Add a few drops of ethanol Stain solution to food sample.
Shake the tube to mix
If lipids are present, cloudy
what is the test for protein and what is the colour change
Add a few drops of Biuret solution to a food sample
Gently shake to mix
If positive, colour change from blue
to purple/lilac
what are the properties of Artery
Thick muscular walls
Carry Blood Away from the Heart
Carry Blood at high pressures due to a Small Lumen
what are the properties of Veins
Elastic walls, less
muscular
Carry Blood back to the
Heart
Carry Blood at a relaxed
speed due to a Large
Lumen
Contain valves to
prevent back flow
what are the properties of Capillaries
Tiny, 1 cell thick walls to
allow for a short
diffusion pathway
High density to allow for
efficient gas exchange
in the body
Permeable walls to
allow for easy diffusion
what is the xylem and what is the process called
water is transported from the roots to the rest of the plant and is called transpiration
what is the phloem and what is the process called
food is transported up and down the plant through the phloem called translocation
what are the prooerties of the xylem
made up of dead cells
water and ions
lignin to strong structure to the walls
