Organisation Flashcards
Explain why the body needs digestive enzymes.
Digestive enzymes break down big food molecules into smaller, soluble food molecules, which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Where is bile a) produced and b) stored?
a) Liver
b) Gall bladder
What enzyme(s) are produced in the small intestine?
Amylase, protease & lipase
What enzyme(s) are produced in the salivary glands?
Amylase
What enzyme(s) are produced in the stomach?
Protease (called pepsin)
Where are proteases produced?
Stomach, small intestine & pancreas
Where is amylase produced?
Salivary glands, small intestine & pancreas
Where are lipases produced?
Small intestine & pancreas
How does the body digest food?
Mechanical digestion - teeth grinding, peristalsis in the oesophagus, stomach churning
Chemical digestion - enzymes break down food (e.g. in the mouth, stomach & small intestine)
What three things does the liver do?
- Produces bile.
- Converts lactic acid into glucose by oxidising it.
- Deamination of amino acids to produce ammonia (and the conversion of ammonia into urea).
