Organic Test 4 Flashcards
1
Q
A
2
Q
Do ethers participate in hydrogen bonding?
A
With water they can, but not with each other because they don’t have an O-H
3
Q
What is the IUPAC method for naming ethers?
A
IUPAC names use the more complex alkyl group as the root name, and the rest of the ether as an alkoxy group (i.e. methoxycyclohexane)
4
Q
What is the IUPAC method for naming epoxides?
A
One systematic method for naming epoxides is to name the rest of the molecule and use the term “epoxy” as a substituent, giving the numbers of the two carbon atoms bonded to the epoxide oxygen
5
Q
How do you find an ether in IR spectroscopy?
A
an R-O-R group can be determined based on the absence of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups
