Organic Synthesis Year 2 Flashcards
1
Q
What is included in organic preparation?
A
reflux and distillation
Using quick fit apparatus
2
Q
How do I purify an organic solid?
A
Filtration under reduced pressure
Recrystallisation:
- solid dissolved in a minimum volume of hot solvent. Must be hot as solubility increases with temperature so it is important for solvent to be near its boiling point.
- filtered so it is allowed to crystallise.
- purified crystals can then be obtained by vacuum filtration. Removes impurities and helps to dry crystals
Measurement of melting points
Comparing to the data book value after determine the melting point. The purer the substance the closer it is to the data book value. If it has a low purity the melting points will take place over a range of temperatures.
