Organic II- Aldehydes and Ketones Flashcards
What is the functional group of an aldehyde?
-CHO
What will aldehydes oxidise to?
Aldehydes oxidise to carboxylic acids and water in the presence of acidified potassium dichromate.
How do you distinguish between aldehydes and ketones?
Tollen’s reagent and Fehling’s solution will produce a positive result when in contact with aldehydes but not ketones.
What is the functional group of a ketone?
C double bond O
How are ketones produced?
The oxidation of secondary alcohols with acidified potassium dichromate.
How can the oxidation reactions to produce ketones and carboxylic acids be reversed?
NaBH4 acts as a reducing agent in an example of nucleophilic addition. A H+ ion is also required so it take place under aqueous conditions.
How are hydroxynitriles produced from aldehydes?
KCN is used in an electrophilic addition reaction that adds CN to an aldehyde.
