Organic Compounds Flashcards
What is an Organic Compound?
A type of compound in which carbon atoms are nearly always bonded to each other, as well as to hydrogen atoms and sometimes a few other specific elements. (Oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus)
What are the two main types of isomers?
Constitutional and Stereoisomers
What are Constitutional Isomers?
These are molecules that have the same molecular formula, but their atoms are bonded together in a different sequence. Also referred to structural isomer.
What are Stereoisomers?
These are molecules that have the same molecular formula and their atoms are bonded together in the same sequence. But they differ in orientations in three-dimensional space. There are two kinds: Diastereomers and enantiomers
What are Diastereomers?
A stereoisomer based on a double bond, in which different atoms or groups are bonded to each carbon in the double bond
What are Enantiomers?
These are stereoisomers where the molecules are mirror images of each other around a single carbon atom bonded to four different atoms or groups
