organic chemistryyy Flashcards
what is structural isomerism?
structural isomers have the same molecular formula but different structural formulas.
what is the lobe?
the region of space between the nuclei of the two atoms sharing the electrons
what is a functional group?
a compound consisting of molecules with a particular atom or grouping of atoms.
what are the three types of structural isomerism?
position isomerism, functional group isomerism, and chain isomerism.
what is position isomerism?
it is the position of the functional group that varies in each isomer.
what is functional group isomerism?
in functional group isomerism, there are different functional groups present
what is chain isomerism?
chain isomers differ in the structure of their carbon skeleton.
what is stereoisomerism?
compounds that have the same atoms of molecules bonded together but different arrangement of the atoms in space
what are the two types of stereoisomerism?
cis-trans isomerism and optical isomerism
what are the two ways in which covalent bonds can break?
homolytic fission and heterolytic fission.
what are fee radicals?
they are the species produced when bond breaks homolytically.
describe the difference between homolytic fission and heterolytic fission?
check text book.
what is cracking?
breaking down of large molecules of hydrocarbons to smaller molecules.
what are the uses of halogenalkanes?
alkanes that include the halogens
