Organic Chemistry Module 4 Flashcards
1
Q
Homologous series
A
Has the same functional group and general formula
2
Q
Aliphatic
A
Straight chains and non-aromatic rings
3
Q
Aromatic
A
Benzene ring
4
Q
Boiling point of alkane
A
- The longer the carbon chain, the stronger the induced dipole dipole forces as there is more surface contact and more electrons to interact.
- Longer carbon chain = greater boiling point
- Branched chains have lower boiling points as they have weaker induced dipole dipole forces as there is less surface contact/ can’t pack closely together.
5
Q
Why are alkanes good fuels?
A
Because they release a lot of energy when they burn
6
Q
Radicals
A
Unpaired electron
7
Q
Electrophile
A
Electron- pair acceptor
8
Q
Cracking
A
Used as organic feedstock to make new chemicals and plastics
