Organic Chemistry Chapter 3 Flashcards
Alkanes are
molecules with multiple carbon carbon single bonds/ saturated hydrocarbons
Saturated Hydrocarbons are
molecules with C-C and C-H single bonds
What does it mean if a compound is Aliphatic Alkane
it is a fatty compound
Straight Chain Alkanes are
carbons in an alkane connected via single row
Branched Chain alkanes are
carbons in an alkans whos chain is branched
Isomers are
compounds that have same number and kind of atoms but differ in the way the atoms are arranged
Constitutional Isomers are
isomers with atoms who are all connected differently so it . has the same molecular formula but different functional groups, properties etc
Alkyl Groups
partial structure that is remaining after removal of an hydrogen atom from an alkane. Not stable but part of a larger compound. Removal of hydrogen from an alkane results in name to go from ane- yl. (methane to methyl)
Straight Chain Alkyl Groups are
alkyl groups whos hydrogen is removed from an end carbon
Branched Chain Alkyl Groups are
generated from removing a hydrogen from an internal carbon atom
What is the trend of Alkane boiling and melting points and why
Increases with molecular weight (more carbons), happens because of presence of weak dispersion forces between molecules
Stereochemistry
branch of chemistry defined with 3 dimensional aspects of molecules
Conformations
Different arrangement of atoms that result from bond rotation
Conformers
molecules that have different arrangements called conformational isomers or Conformers
what are the 2 ways of representing conformational isomers?
- Sawhorse representaiton (views bonds from an oblique angle and indicates special orientation)
- Newman Projection
