Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon
A compound made of hydrogen and carbon molecules only
What is a saturated compound
A compound containing only single bonds, sush as alkanes.
What is an unsaturated compound?
A compound containing one or more multiple bonds, for example an alkene
What is a multiple bond?
Two or more covalent bonds between two atoms
What is a feature of an organic compound?
Contains carbon, and most contain hydrogen too
what are the three categories of chemistry?
inorganic, organic and physical
what are the vast majority of compounds?
organic
what did Friedrich Wohler discover in 1828?
that urea could be made by heating ammonium cyanate which is not organic
what did Wohler prove in 1828?
that organic substances can be made in other ways than just in the human body.
the main feature of an organic compound is
that it contains carbon
almost all organic compounds contain
hydrogen
some of the most important organic compounds contain elements such as
nitrogen and oxygen
sucrose is not a hydrocarbon because
it contains oxygen
carbohydrates are not hydrocarbon because the -ate ending shows it contains
oxygen
the two classes of hydrocarbons are
saturated and unsaturated
