Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Definetion-Addition Reaction
Small molecule added across the double bond of an alkene
Alkanes
A series of hydrocarbons with the general formula C(n)H(2n+2); they have only single bonds between carbon atoms in their structures. Also known as saturated hydrocarbons
Alkenes
A series of hydrocarbons with the general formula C(n)H(2n); they have one or more carbon to carbon double bonds in their structures. Also known as unsaturated hydrocarbons
Catalyst
A substance which speeds up the rate of reaction and allows it to happen at lower energy
Catalytic Cracking
Process of splitting long chain hydrocarbons into shorter chain hydrocarbons
Combustion
A chemical reaction in which a substance reacts with oxygen - the reaction is exothermic. Burning is a combustion reaction which produces a flame.
Complete Combustion
The burning of carbon or a carbon containing fuel in excess air and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water
Crude Oil
Crude oil or petroleum is a naturally occurring oil that consists of a complicated mixture of hydrocarbons
Display Formula
A chemical formula which shows the atoms and bonds present in a molecule of a substance
Fossil Fuel
Fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, formed underground over geological periods of time from the decaying remains of plants and animals
Fractional Distillation
A method of distillation using a fractionating column; it is used to separate liquids with different boiling points
Fuel
A substance that can be made to release heat energy
Fraction
A product of fractional distillation; all the molecules in the same fraction have similar physical properties and boil within a close range
General Formula
Formula used to describe the number of each element in a given type of molecule
Hydrocarbon
Molecules that are composed only of carbon and hydrogen
