Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
Hydrocarbons consist of the spine of carbon atoms surrounded by hydrogens.
They only contain carbon & hydrogen.
How many carbon atoms does Methane have?
1
How many carbon atoms does Ethane have?
2
How many carbon atoms does Propane have?
3
How many carbon atoms does Butane have?
4
How many carbon atoms does Hectane have?
7
What is the general formula for an Alkane?
C(n)H(2n+2)
What’s the general formula for an Alkene?
C(n)H(2n)
What type of hydrocarbon contains a carbon carbon double bond?
Alkenes
Because they have a double carbon bond, what are alkanes described as?
Saturated
How can you test for an alkene?
Use Bromine Water - Orange colour turns colourless
What does Cracking do?
Cracking turns longer less useful hydrocarbons into shorter more useful hydrocarbons
What does cracking always produce?
An Alkane and an Alkene
What are isomers?
Isomers are molecules that have the same molecular formula to one or more other compounds
What are the products of burning alkanes?
Carbon dioxide and water
