Organic chemistry Flashcards
What is the homologous series?
The family of carbon compounds that have the same general formula and similar chemical properties
What is saturated?
Single bonds
What is unsaturated,
The use of double bonds
What is the general formula for alkanes?
CnH2n+2
What is Bromomethane?
Substitution reaction, because one of the hydrogen atoms in methane swap for a bromine atom, it also produces hydrogen chloride,
UV light must be present
What is cracking?
The process in which large hydrocarbon molecules are broken into smaller ones
What is the difference between complete and incomplete combustion?
Complete combustion is when there is plenty of oxygen
Complete combustion is completely safe as the products are completely harmless
What is the complete combustion formula?
Alkane + Oxygen- Carbon Dioxide +water
Eg, CH4 +2O2 -] CO2 + 2H2O
What is the equation for incomplete combustion?
Alkane + Small amount of oxygen–] Carbon + Carbon Monoxide+ Carbon Dioxide + water
Halogens react with Alkanes to form what and in what conditions? And give an example
Haloalkanes in the presence of UV, Bromomethane
Describe what are haloalkanes? What type of reaction?
A hydrogen atom from the alkane is substituted by a chlorine or Bromine, it is a substitution reaction
