Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Homologous series
Is a series of organic compounds with the same functional group (so similar reactions) but with each successive member differing by CH2
Functional group
A group of atoms in an organic compound responsible for its chemical reaction.
Empirical formula
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound.
Molecular formula
The actual number of each element present in a molecule.
General formula of Alkanes? Alkenes?
Alkanes: CnH2n+2
Alkenes: CnH2n+1
Structural formula
The minimal detail that shows the arrangement of atoms in a molecule, Eg. CH3CH2OH
Displayed formula
This shows how all the atoms are arranged and ALL the bonds between them.
Skeletal formula
Shows the bonds of the carbon skeleton. Only shows any functional groups- does not show H’s bonded directly to C
Structural isomers
Compounds with the same molecular for,USA but have different structural formula.
Stereo isomers
Compounds with the same molecular and structural formula but a different arrangement of atoms.
Functional group isomers
Compounds with different functional groups.
Eg. C3H6O
Propanone and Propanal
Positional isomers
Compounds with the same functional group but in a different position.
Eg C3H8O
Propan-1-ol and Propan-2-ol
E/Z isomerism
A compound with a C=C (restricted rotation) and 2 different grooms attaches to each carbon (cis/trans is a special case of E/Z isomerism).
Eg C4H8
Cisbut-2-ene and transbut-2-ene
Hydrocarbons
Compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen only
Satuated
Contains only single bonds (maximum number of hydrogens)
