Q

How do alcohols produce carboxylic acids?

A

oxidised by chemical oxidising agents e.g potassium dichromate or microbial action.

Ethanol produces ethanoic acid by being oxidised by microbes in air which is the main acid in vinegar and is the reason alcoholic drinks turn sour

Q

What is the functional group of esters?

A

COO

16
Q

What are esters?

A

volatile compounds with distinctive smells

17
Q

What can esters be used as?

A

flavourings and in perfumes

18
Q

Give positive evaluation points of organic chemicals

A

Used in foods, drinks and as solvent for the vendor of society
Biofuels offer environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels

19
Q

Give negative evaluation points of organic chemicals

A

Abuse of solvents and alcoholic drinks can lead to health and social problems

deforestation may occur to provide room to grow crops for biofuels
