Organic chemistry Flashcards
What is crude oil a mixture of
liquid hydrocarbons , with other gases and solid hydrocarbons dissolved in it
How is crude oil made
1) plankton dies and falls to sea floor
2) the dead plankton gets covered in mud
3) more and more mud builds up
4) this creates heat and pressure witch turns the dead plankton into oil and gas
5) we can drill down trough the rock to get the oil
Separation of crude oil
1) the crude oil is heated until it becomes a gas
2) it enters a fractional distillation
3) the tower is hotter at the bottom and cooler at the top
4) as the mixture of gases moves up the tower , some gasses cool + condense from a gas to a liquid
5) theses liquids from at different levals becses thye have diffrent boiling points and are then collected separately

ethane
If you had 4c and ene what is the name of the compound
butene
If you had 1c and ane what is the name of the compound
methane
If you had 3c and ene what is the name of the compound
propene
What is the molecular formula for methane
CH4
What is the molecular formula for ethane
C2H6
What is the molecular formula for propane
C3H8
What is the molecular formula for butane
C4H10
What is the state at room temperature + pressure for alkanes
gas
Methane + oxygen— carbon dioxide + water
C4 + 2O — CO2 + 2H2O
Butane + oxygen — carbon dioxide + water
C4H10 + 6 1/2 — 4CO2 + 5H2O
( 2C4H10 + 13O2 — 8CO2 + 10 H20 )
When there is a fraction double
What is the word equation for butane
butane + oxygen — carbon dioxide + water
Describe 2 effects of increasing amounts of green house gasses
1) becomes thicker and traps more of the sun radiation
2) it acts as a blanket around the earth
