Organic CHemistry Flashcards
How many bonds does carbon form?
4
What are the reasons carbon is in so many compounds?
Carbon forms 4 bonds, carbon can form single, double, and trickle bonds, carbon bonds with Nancy things, can form chains and rings, and have lots of isomers
What can carbon bond with?
C, H, N, O, F, Cl, Br, I, S, P, B, Si, and metals.
What is a isomer?
The same formula but different structures.
What is it called if there are all single carbon bond?
Alkane
What is it called when there is at least one double carbon bond?
Alkene
What is it called when there is at least one triple carbon bond?
Alkyne
How many carbon is in the squiggly line thing
As many as the points of inflection
What is the formula for alkane?
C(n)H(2n+2)
Modifier for one carbon?
Meth-
Modifier for 2 carbon?
eth-
Modifier for 3 carbon?
prop-
Modifier for 4 carbon?
BUT
Modifier for 5 carbon?
pent
Modifier for 6 carbon?
Hex
Modifier for 9 carbon?
non
So what is C6H14?
HEX(ane for the single bond)
What is methyl?
CH3
What number do you put in front of a modifier (like Dimethyl)
The spot it is on
What is Ch3-Ch2-H
Ethane
CH3-CH2- name
Eth(YL)
What happens if there are 2 methyl’s on one spot?
Repeat the number twice.
What happens if it diverges?
Go with the longest chain.
How to even start counting carbons?
Start from the longest chain and the one that makes the modifier number the smallest.(including different directions)
What trumps the longest chain rule?
Double bonds>triple bonds
What do you do about double bonds and triple bonds in the carbon chain?
You also need to put their locations(the one the number lands on
