Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What type of resource is crude oil?
A finite resource
Where is crude oil found?
rocks
What is crude oil made of?
Made of ancient biomass
What is crude oil a mixture of?
It is a mixture of hydrocarbons
What do hydrocarbons mainly consist of?
Alkanes
What is a homologous series?
A group of compounds, that have similar properties, due to having the same functional group, and the same general formula.
5 examples of homologous series?
- Alkanes
- Alkenes
- Alcohols
- Carboxylic acids
- Esters
Which is more reactive - alkenes or alkanes
alkenes
What catalyst do alkenes use to react with hydrogen?
A nickel catalyst
What catalyst do alkanes use to react with water?
An acid catalyst
What is produced, when alkenes are burnt?
CO2 and H20, with a smoky flame.
How can alcohols be produced?
By the fermentation of sugar, by yeast.
Also produced by hydration of alkenes with steam.
What can alcohols be used as?
Can be used as solvents.
What can carboxylic acids form, when dissolved in water?
Weak acids, as they do not fully ionise.
What is produced, when carboxylic acids react with carbonate?
They produce CO2 bubbles.
