organic chemistry Flashcards
What is the definition of a functional group?
The functional group is the part of the molecule which determines how it is going to react.
What is the definition of a homologous series?
A homologous series is where molecules have the same functional group and successive members differ by CH2
What is a structural isomer?
A structural isomer has the same molecular formula but different structural formula
why are alkanes unreactive?
strong bonds and non polar
What are chain isomers?
Isomers which are branched with carbons.
What are positional isomers?
Isomers with the same functional group but on a different carbon.
What are functional isomers?
Isomers with a different functional group.
